Brilliant Green is a Triarylmethane dye closely related to malachite green. It has been used to stain tissues in research and kill bacteria as an antiseptic. It is also used to study plant growth by staining nodule initials in Lupinus angustifolius and Arachis hypogaea. In Russia and Ukraine, it’s often called as “zelyonka” or “zelenka” and is frequently sold as a vital antiseptic. It’s also a visible light-activated photocatalyst in organic synthesis.

It is used in disinfecting cuts, scars, and skin injuries, as well as treating inflammatory skin conditions like pyoderma and furunculosis.
Brilliant Green and Malachite Green are not the same. While both are triarylmethane dyes, they have different chemical compositions and uses. Brilliant Green is primarily used as a topical antiseptic, whereas Malachite Green is often used as a dye and for treating fish infections.
Brilliant Green is a cationic dye. It carries a positive charge, which allows it to bind to negatively charged components, such as bacterial cell walls and certain biological tissues.
It is a derivative of triarylmethane dye, similar to Malachite Green.
It does change color in different chemical environments. For example, in sulfuric acid, it appears yellowish-green, and when diluted, it turns greenish-green before forming a green precipitate.
Brilliant Green is a basic dye. It’s soluble in both water and alcohol and can be used as a counterstain with Eosin Y or Safranine O.
It works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria, particularly Gram-positive organisms, through disruption of their cell membranes.
Brilliant green is used in minor wounds, skin infections, and infection of the umbilical cord in newborns, and the treatment of hordeolum, blepharitis, and pyoderma. It is applied to the skin to prevent infection against Gram-positive bacteria
